SEMMA Welding Course Update

WEEK 1

SEMMA were thrilled to welcome our first cohort of students for our industry-led Welding Skills Short Course! This diverse group have the opportunity to learn in a real factory environment in Dandenong South and utilise augmented reality welding simulators.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be placed into full-time work with an exciting local manufacturer.


This program is delivered in collaboration with the Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment (DESE) and facilitated by Chisholm Institute. Thank you to member Hilton Manufacturing Pty Ltd for providing the use of their training room.

WEEK 2

SEMMA’s inaugural welding class have moved from theory to practical. After building their skills on the welding simulator, they are now welding independently and practicing clean joins.

WEEK 2 HIGHLIGHTS VIDEO

This short course will equip participants to perform the work of “Class 2 Welders” – sufficient to meet over an estimated 70% of welding tasks required by manufacturers in the southeast.

 

WEEK 3 

Students had the opportunity to meet with potential employers from SEMMA’s manufacturing member base.

During this informal networking session, students were able to learn about the requirements of different manufacturers and demonstrate their skills on the welding simulator. All guests were invited to try their hand at the simulator under the expert guidance of instructor Sowatt from Chisholm Institute.

  • Individuals impacted by COVID-19 in their previous employment

 

BACKGROUND:

In 2021, SEMMA received $200,000 of funding from the Federal government to launch an industry-led welding skills short course program, designed to provide a continuity of skills needed for the future of manufacturing.

In partnership with the Local Jobs Program (LJP). The LJP is funded by the Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment.
