Hackers – how and why?
HOW do hackers steal your data?
WHY do they do it?
Nearly every business I talk to is worried about cyberattacks.
Two of the most common questions I hear are “How do hackers attack?” and “What’s their motivation?”
When it comes to hackers, there are three common strategies used:
- Social engineering.
- Brute force.
- Phishing emails.
Currently, phishing is definitely the most common and is continually evolving in sophistication.
A strategy known as “spear-phishing” is now being used to gain access to important emails and then use the formatting and details to create and send fake invoices to other members of the organisation.
So, be on the lookout for these types of attacks.
As for motivations, there are two main ones.
The first is money. A lot of hackers will steal your data and hold it ransom, forcing you to pay to get it back.
In these scenarios, perhaps only 50% of the time your data will be returned and at a significant financial cost.
The second motivation is simply wanting to inflict pain on your business.
This could be a disgruntled employee or simply someone who’s just out to start trouble.
These types of attacks are more dangerous and you’re less likely to get your data back in these situations.
There are lots of ways you can be attacked and lots of reasons why, so it’s best to be prepared for all possible scenarios.
