“A success story of partnership between universities and industries.”

Abstract:
Work Integrated Learning (WIL) in postgraduate engineering programs enhances the capability of
students to tackle the socio-technical-cultural challenges of their profession and provide solutions to
real-life problems. Our postgraduate programs in Maintenance and Reliability Engineering (MRE)
are uniquely placed to offer WIL that immediately benefits student’s existing industries, and this
synergistic partnership is the key to the continued success of MRE programmes.

Close to 300 engineers, managers and technical professionals with existing industrial linkages and workplaces,
are enrolled in MRE courses each year. Students negotiate industry-based practical projects within
their workplaces, applying their knowledge and skills to address the existing MRE challenges of their
industries, supported by industry and academic supervisors. This project-based assessment does
so much more than fulfilling academic requirements; it gives students opportunities to contribute
tangible solutions to their industry while studying and forges mutually beneficial partnerships
between their industry and the university.
